Early Research Finds Chiropractic Adjustment Dramatically Improves Balance

December 27, 2009 | Filed under: General Interest, Sports

Most people think of chiropractic helping with neck pain but very few think about improved balence. Balance is important for athletes who rely heavily on their proprioception (or balance) in order to perform the complex movements but it’s also important to our older population.

(A rail slide can be mighty painful if your balance is off)

The risk of slipping and falling compounded by the increased risk of mortality if a hip is fractured (in older populations) makes exploring every possible conservative option for improving balance.  This new research, although a small study size, points to the potential of improved balance, and some showed reduced dizziness.

Avoid Soda-Especially When Pregnant

December 25, 2009 | Filed under: Pregnancy

This study published in DiabetesCare suggests that higher consumption of sugar-sweetened cola (≥5 servings/week) is associated with an elevated gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) risk (22% increase compared to those who had <1 a month).

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common pregnancy complications. Women with GDM are at increased risk for complications and illness during pregnancy and delivery, as well as post-pregnancy type 2 diabetes. Children of mothers with GDM are at increased risk for obesity, glucose intolerance, and early onset diabetes.

Teens Are In Pain

According to the study published in Spine: No pain at all in the past 6 months at 16 and 18 years was reported by 17% and 8% of girls, and 33% and 24% of boys, respectively. Only 1 pain location (neck, shoulder, low back, or peripheral pain) was reported by 21% of girls and 25% of boys at 16, and 11% of girls and 20% of boys at 18 years, while all 4 pain locations were reported by 15% of girls and 9% of boys at 16, and 27% and 15%, respectively, at 18 years.

And it didn’t look better after the 2 year check in. And patient’s often shrug off their kids complaints of pain- it’s much easier to correct a problem early on before it progresses so bring your kids in. I love treating kids, they usually get better much quicker than adults because they have less scar tissue and there body hasn’t totally compensated yet or gotten use to the bad habits.

Kids Are Sharing Drugs and Sharing the Side Effects

December 19, 2009 | Filed under: General Interest, Kids

We interviewed 594 adolescents throughout the United States. One in five reported sharing prescription medication. Of these, less than half received instructions, many delayed professional care, few informed providers, and a third reported experiencing side effects. Efforts to reduce medication sharing prevalence and risks among adolescents may be justified.

In this study the researchers interviewed almost 600 adolescents throughout the US and found 1 in 5 reported sharing prescription medication.

This should be addressed:

Why is there so much sharing going on?
Easy access?
Feels safer than illicit drugs?
Money/lack of health insurance?
Are the borrowing drugs to get high or to manage conditions that could be better managed through conservative care or at least a proper prescription that is being monitored or side effects and catered to the individual?

Avoid Giving Your Kids Daily Candy- It Increases Their Likelihood of Adult Violence

The British Journal of Psychiatry found that daily candy consumption increases odds of adult violence. The conclusion of the recent study states:

Diet has been associated with behavioural problems, including aggression, but the long-term effects of childhood diet on adult violence have not been studied. We tested the hypothesis that excessive consumption of confectionery at age 10 years predicts convictions for violence in adulthood (age 34 years). Data from age 5, 10 and 34 years were used. Children who ate confectionery daily at age 10 years were significantly more likely to have been convicted for violence at age 34 years, a relationship that was robust when controlling for ecological and individual factors.

In an interview by Medscape Psychiatry, one of the researchers, Dr. Simon, stated, “we think that kids who demand candy every day do not learn to delay gratification, which some think is a feature of violent individuals generally”.

Wow-that’s an interesting study!

Golfers- Don’t Just Stretch, Adding Chiropractic Improves Your Golf Performance According to New Research

December 13, 2009 | Filed under: General Interest

The researchers concluded that chiropractic adjustments in association with muscle stretching may be associated with an improvement of full-swing performance when compared with muscle stretching alone.

No improvement in performance was noted in the strech group. An improvement was was observed in the chiropractic adjustment group at all phases (P = .003).

All golfers performed 3 full-swing maneuvers. Ball range was considered as the average distance for the 3 shots. Treatment was performed after the initial measurement, and the same maneuvers were performed afterward. Each participant repeated these procedures for a 4-week period.

Between the adjustments and custom foot levelers which have been shown to improve golf performance there are many things we can do to improve your game at ProActive Chiropractic.

H1N1 Pandemic Swine Flu is Far Less Lethal Than Hyped-Only a Little More Serious Than an Average Flu Season

December 12, 2009 | Filed under: General Interest

With all of the fear mongering I thought it was fitting to report a Reuters publication:

The first comprehensive analysis of deaths from swine flu in England since the H1N1 virus was declared a pandemic in June shows there are 26 deaths in every 100,000 cases of swine flu — a death rate of 0.026 percent.

The study echoes U.S. research published on Monday which found the H1N1 pandemic had a death rate of 0.048 percent, or 1 death in 2,000 cases — only a little more serious than an average flu season.

These findings are often overlooked by the CDC and the media in general so take a deep breath and relax, you have less to fear, which decreasing the fear will probably improve your immune systems response.  I would still encourage you to do the easy steps to stay healthy.

  1. Drink lots of water
  2. Aerobic exercise (at least 20 minutes a day)
  3. Wash you hands
  4. Cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough
  5. Eat well
  6. Get 7-8 hours of sleep
  7. Stay Positive- trust me it helps (one of the down sides of the fear H1N1 pandemic approach)
  8. Get adjusted, get a massage, and get acupuncture
  9. Play-Balance keeps you healthy

Holidays Bring Stress, Pains to Many; ProActive Chiropractic Offers “12 Days of Health and Wellness” for a Healthy, Happy Season

December 12, 2009

Arlington, Va. – The upcoming holiday season is full of reasons for good cheer, but the added demands of the season can also stress the capacities of our bodies.

Research shows that stress and unhealthy behaviors contribute to some of our country’s biggest health problems such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes. This stress can also build up inside the body and manifest as back pain, neck pain or headaches…making matters even worse.

Doctors of chiropractic are expert in spinal adjustment and other manual therapies that can relieve the aches and pains caused by holiday stress. They also provide nutrition counseling, exercise recommendations, ergonomic tips and other advice to promote good health year-round.

ProActive Chiropractic and the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), in an effort to promote health and wellness this holiday season, offers “12 Days of Health and Wellness,” a campaign designed to give consumers tips on ways to manage the holidays more healthfully.  Each day focuses on a different topic such as choosing nutritious foods, getting enough sleep, and stretching after tree-trimming or gift wrapping to help ease back pain.

“The holidays are synonymous with frenzied activities, parties, shopping and stress, so it is imperative that people take steps to address these issues in healthier ways,” said Andrew C. Cohen, DC, an ACA member. “It’s the perfect time to use ACA’s tips to take control of your health and to discover chiropractic’s natural approach to wellness. A doctor of chiropractic can customize a wellness program that’s right for you.”

Look for fact sheets, audio public service announcements and additional links to helpful information at www.acatoday.org/12days.

ACA is the largest organization representing doctors of chiropractic in the United States.
