Home should be a sanctuary, but many common household products thought to make it more pleasant contain toxic chemicals that are linked to cancer, reproductive problems, birth defects, and other health damage especially during COVID-19. Among them:
- Air fresheners, which frequently contain phthalates, volatile organic compounds, and carcinogens, not to mention artificial fragrances made up of a string of unpronounceable chemicals.
- Commercial, scented candles can also be toxic, with nearly half of those looked at in a recent study containing lead in their wicks, and many containing paraffin wax, which releases highly toxic cancer-causing substances when burned.
- Lotions, shampoos, and conditioners—including some labeled as “natural” or “organic” —contain cacogenic ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate, polyethylene glycol (PEG), cocamide DEA and parabens.
