Not too soft, not too hard. A hard seat concentrates pressure directly on the ischial tuberosities and the soft tissue around them — which sits right above the sciatic nerve pathway. A very soft seat lets you sink into poor alignment. Firm, dense foam that holds its shape is what you want.

Armrests

Adjustable armrests that let your elbows rest at 90 degrees take load off your upper back and shoulders. When the upper back is overloading, it shifts tension down the chain. Armrests are less critical than lumbar support, but they matter for all-day sitting.

Recline capability

Being able to recline to 110–130 degrees reduces compressive load on your lumbar discs. If you're going to be seated for the majority of the day, a chair that lets you vary your angle throughout the day will serve you better than one that locks you in place.

Kneeling chairs work for some people. They open the hip angle and reduce lumbar compression, which can decrease sciatic nerve irritation.
